The Liffey Descent is one of the greatest events which can be viewed in Lucan on a yearly basis now in its 51st year. The canoeing race, which is the equivalent of a marathon on water, sets off from the K Club in Straffan, Co Kildare, to Islandbridge in Dublin. Over 800 competitors are taking part this year which is down from 1,000 who competed last year. There is a large selection of experienced and novices taking part. One of the best viewing point along the route is at Lucan Bridge in Lucan.
Come along and cheer on the canoeists as the tackle the difficult weir at Lucan Bridge. Canoeists set off at 12.30pm from the K Club in Straffan and you should see the first canoists appearing at Lucan weir soon after 1.30pm with the last contestants coming through around 3.30 -4pm. A wonderful sight for all the family and hopefully the weather holds up.
