Historic view of Lucan, by curtor Joe Byrne

ballyowen castle

Festival chairman and local historian Joe Byrne will exhibit a large collection of historic photographs, documents and other memorabilia on Lucan. The exhibition will take place on Saturday the 25th and Sunday 26th of September at St Andrews parish centre.

This exhibition should prove very popular for both new and old residents of Lucan.
Lucan is steeped in history going back to King Johns bridge which dates back to the 1200’s to the arrival of Patrick Sarsfield’s family at the end of the 1500’s to Games Gandon one of the most renowned architects of the 18th century who build the Custom Hose, The Four Courts and many other prestigious buildings in Dublin, he resided in Lucan for many years and died in Cannon Brook house in 1842.

The Spa Hotel from the early 1900′

The Lucan Spa Hotel has a long history. The site first became a health resort in 1758 when an iron spa was discovered at Chapel Hill. In 1795, the Old Hotel (now the Lucan County Bar) was built incorporating a ballroom built some time earlier. This Old Spa Hotel was a fashionable meeting point throughout the 18th Century, in whose surroundings the prosperous pillars of society then rested and entertained themselves with high social activities such as fox hunting with the Kildare and Meath Hunt. About this time a terrace of fine Georgian houses (The Crescent) were also built for all the holidaymakers who came to the Lucan Spa. At the end of the 19th Century, with the coming of trams and trains, the Lucan Spa went from strength to strength. In 1911 a new hotel and sanatorium were opened on the River Liffey by the Lucan Hydrophatic Spa company.

The first National Census was recorded in 1841. At that time Lucan’s population was 563. It had almost doubled by 1951 (1,297) but between 1971 and 1976, it increased from 4,245 to 12,451.  2010 its population exceeds 42,000 people.

Lucan Festival

Welcome to this years Festival which will run from this Sunday 9th September to the following Sunday the 16th. This is our fourth since starting back and each year we believe we have improved. The Festival is organised by a Committee of 12 drawn from all areas of Lucan together with volunteers who help out during Fund raising and the events during the Festival week.

Despite TROIKAS, AUSTERITY, CUTBACKS and anything else you can throw into the mixer we have succeeded in putting together what we believe is an excellent week of Festival events.
You can start the week by joining the 5K walk etc and help to purchase a defibrillator for Lucan, however the rest of the week is a lot easier as you can seat yourself comfortably in the Presbyterian Church to hear about Rev JAH Irwin who was involved on the Republican side in the War Of Independence and the 1937 Irish Constitution, enjoy Michael Grants musical talk on British Musicals, find out about the life and times of Jane W Shackleton (1843-1909) and the historically rich photographs she took of Lucan and Ireland and finally Suzanne Pegley (one of the authors of Aspects of Lucan) will examine and illustrate the rich history of Lucan House. All these talks are at 8pm as per programme inside.
We’re not forgetting the fans of “Strictly Come Dancing” when on Thurs 13th a Tea Dance will be held in the Spa Hotel where again you can forget your woes and enjoy dancing to Night Patrol. Whilst Brucie won’t be there, a good night should be had by all.
Lucan Sarsfield will hold a Family Day on Sat 15th and the Historical Exhibition will open for the weekend in the Church of Ireland Parish Centre.
The week ends with the whole Village area closed to traffic to allow you to stroll from the Ball Alley to the Ulster Bank bringing you back to the Village of the 1900’s when you would only be disturbed by Horse and Carts or the electric Tram. On display will be Lucan Garda Station where you can inspect how the Garda go about their business of protecting the community. Local organisations/ groups will display their wares and how they operate in the community. Small local companies will be selling and displaying what they make. Lucan Gospel Choir will give a recital in St Andrew’s Church of Ireland from 4 to 5pm. We have for the children Birds of Prey, local scouts, pet farm, stilt walker, face painting and many more attractions. We are hoping for good weather, but regardless, you should call to the Village and support the Festival.
All the events could not take place without the financial support of SDCC, CPLN, local business and yourselves who supported our fundraising throughout the last year.
So come out and show the ECB, Troika and the EU that we can still enjoy ourselves.
Joe Byrne Chairman
